The Black Book: Know Your Rights

Civil Rights violations happen every day, but most go unreported. One way to protect yourself is to KNOW YOUR OWN RIGHTS and exercise them. Every person in the United States, including non-citizens, has guaranteed rights granted by the Constitution and other laws. These rights may be violated by government officials and others.

This Booklet is a resource. It will help anyone who carries it become familiar with their rights, to recognize when they are being violated, and to have the information they need to act and protect themselves.

About the Black Book

The Black Book is a pocket-sized resource for people to better know their rights and to protect themselves against violations of those rights. It covers the specific areas of Civil Rights, Voting Rights, Racial Profiling, Immigrant Rights and Police Brutality with straightforward explanations, examples and resources such as important rights protection organizations and phone numbers.

Dunk the Vote, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit focused on voting rights and racial justice, created the first Massachusetts-focused edition of The Black Book in early 2025 in response to a climate of increasing violations of people’s rights.

Due to its popularity and in response to requests, The Black Book is being edited into state-specific and Spanish language editions. For states not yet available, you can order a customized version for your state (see below).

Dunk the Vote is also offering staff trainings on how to use and distribute The Black Book. If you are interested in learning more about arranging a training, click here, or check the check-box when you check out.

Ways to Help

Donate Books

Our mission is to help as many people as possible. We provide The Black Book for free in digital form on our website. We distribute as many copies as we can to individuals. If you would like to donate books for Dunk the Vote to distribute, you can Donate Books.

Interested in Smaller Quantities of The Black Book?

If you live in or near Boston, get in touch with Dunk the Vote, and we will work with you on an individual basis. The quantities and prices available for direct order on this web page are set to minimize cost and to enable direct shipping from the printer. Due to the processing required for many small orders and our small staff, we are not able to sell small quantities directly through our website. But as our distribution partners grow, it will become easier to obtain smaller quantities.

Explore Becoming a Distribution Partner

If you are an individual, we need your help to seek out distribution partners. Talk to organizations near you (colleges, churches, book stores, nonprofits, community organizations, local businesses, etc.) and put them in touch with us to explore a partnership so that we can make The Black Book available to individuals in your area. Please feel free to send them this web page, or encourage them to email info@dunkthevote4ever.org.
